The Arhuaca mochila

The story behind the spiritual meaning of an ancient art form

Behind the craft of Arhuaca mochilas lies an ancient tradition filled with deep spiritual symbolism. According to tradition, the Arhuaca mochila, called “Tutu” in the Arhuaco language, is an ancient art form that has existed since the beginning of creation, even before the first sunrise.

In its origins, it embodies the thought of the first woman created, Nawowa, and also symbolises Mother Earth. Nawowa taught a way of life in deep harmony with the earth and nature and created the craft of bag weaving so that women could share their thoughts with the world without words.
