Between tradition and modernity: education as a bridge to the future
The Indigenous Arhuaco communities live between two worlds: the largely unspoilt natural environment of northern Colombia, their home for generations, and modern society, which increasingly influences their lives. Maintaining this balance brings significant challenges. For a long time, they lived largely in harmony with nature and mostly isolated from outside influences. But the changes of our time affect them too. The Arhuacos have recognised that education is the key to a self-determined future. It enables them to advocate for their rights beyond their communities, develop new economic opportunities and access essential services such as modern healthcare.
Through our work with the Indigenous schools of the Arhuaco communities in Colombia, we want to take an important step in this direction together. Our projects focus on providing essential school materials and improving infrastructure, because education creates opportunities and strengthens communities in the long term. By starting with the children, we help the whole community preserve its traditions while acquiring the skills needed for a self-determined future.
